Prolonged low temperatures can increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes, lung illnesses and flu, with accompanying snow and ice bringing the risk of serious injuries from slips and falls. Some groups, such as older people, very young children, and people with serious medical conditions are particularly vulnerable to the effects of cold weather.
